What did 20mm consumers save on in July? A look at what's trending at Access

One of the cool things about working at Access is seeing what people are saving money on, day-to-day. We serve hundreds of clients, who in turn offer our vast network of merchant discounts to their customers/employees - building loyalty, retention and/or incremental revenue, among other things. That end-user base is around 20 million people from all ages, ethnicities and regions of the country. We have analytic tools that show us what people (without names attached, of course) are saving on in real-time, and they also allow us to see trends emerge over any period of time.

We thought it would be fun to take a monthly peek into where people saved the most, what trends emerged and if there were any surprises.

In July, we learned...

  • All throughout the month, people loaded up on back to school savings at places like Kohl's and Target.com.
  • The Sports Authority also saw a big bump, due in part to a great deal but also perhaps because of parents buying sporting gear for their kids. It could also have been people buying gear for their last-minute vacations...
  • Which they booked at mid-month, largely in response to a slew of deals from Endless Vacation Rentals, Walt Disney World and Six Flags Theme Parks.
  • Our biggest customer movement of the year took place later in July, as thousands flocked to snatch up a deal from Verizon Wireless. It may have had something to do with a certain phone that debuted around then.

Back to school shopping is likely to continue in the coming months, but expect a rise in dining deals and movies, as people move away from vacations and move into the more traditional routine of an occasional fun night out.

We have a hand in shaping these trends, and we also react to them. We help influence customer behavior directly with our marketing tactics, and we know that in July people are typically interested in last-minute travel and back to school shopping. Similarly, if we see certain segments of customers are loving a particular merchant's deal, we'll make sure to spread the word to the rest of the network.
