What Matters in Points and Miles Programs?

While I was in college, a popular national sandwich chain opened a location in the student union area. This chain allows customers to earn points on every purchase, and 50 points meant a free footlong. For the impatient, 25 could turn into a cookie, or 40 for a six incher.

Loyalty Expo 2013 logoI invited a friend to grab sandwiches there one afternoon, and when I offered to pay for his, he balked. He told me that he wanted to pay for his own because he was just a few points away from earning a free footlong.

Huh.

That’s a bit goofy, but it illustrates the allure of points and miles programs to consumers. Earning currency on each purchase that can later be redeemed for free stuff is one of the easiest ways to lure customers to a program. In the case of many folks, such as my friend, it’s a key factor in purchase decisions.

As effective as they can be, these programs toe some fine lines. Do they encourage quick earn and even quicker low-threshold redemptions? Or long-term hoarding for bigger rewards such as flights? How do they manage to find attractive rewards that don’t break the bank?

The approaches are limitless, but the goal is the same: getting the customer to come back to the brand over and over again.

At the upcoming Loyalty Expo, we’ve assembled a panel of points program executives who deal with these challenges on a daily basis. If you’re planning to attend the expo, stop by at 9am on Friday (March 22) in room Ocean 8 to hear our experts share their expertise:

“Points and Miles at the Intersection of Cost and Loyalty” will be moderated by Kelly Passey, and it should be an eye opener. Read the press release about it here.

Access will be at the Loyalty Expo all week at booth 208. We’ll be showing off PowerDeals, and attendees are welcome to stop by and grab a complimentary membership to our ever-growing mobile coupon network.

Access in the News

Things have been hot here at Access over the past few weeks, which is helpful since March and April have been snowy in Salt Lake City. Want to see some of what we’ve been up to? Here are a few news links featuring Access:

Merchant funded rewards are the next big thing for banks and credit/issuers. Access was included in a NetBanker report on the topic.

What does the future hold for regulation in the banking industry? Access EVP of Business and Product Development Kelly Passey offers his thoughts in this Transaction World column by James Romeo.

Access has won several “Best Places to Work” awards over the years, largely because of our commitment to an environment that star employees want to be (and remain) a part of. Our own Travis Isaacson talked with the Topgrading blog about how Access screens and interviews candidates to ensure only the cream of the crop emerge.

Our company has a long history in the resort & shared ownership industries. We’ve teamed up with industry membership group C.A.R.E. to offer our discount program to all new members, so look for Access to become an even bigger part of the timeshare world.

Lastly, Access made a splash at the Loyalty Expo, both as an exhibitor and presenter. Keep an eye on this space as we’ll be posting some recaps and more material to come from the conference.

Recapping the Loyalty Expo and Kicking Off ARDA

Conference and expo season are most definitely upon us; that time of year when industry groups gather to learn, share and show off. These expos are a great opportunity for companies like Access to meet new folks and reconnect in person with old friends. It also means we have a makeshift satellite office in Orlando for the month of March.

We spent last week at the Loyalty Expo, hosted by Loyalty 360. It was great to hear some of the brightest minds in the loyalty world sharing their practices for building customer relationships and talking about the future. We are living in the Golden Age of the Consumer thanks to the competition for loyalty among brands, and much of what we saw showed us that it’s only going to get better for the Average Joe.

We’ll gladly say this includes our mobile coupon network, which offers 65,000+ “show your phone” offers, which generated a ton of interest around the Access booth.

One of the big topics at the expo was the 2010 Cone Consumer New Media Study, and specifically one stat it revealed: 80% of consumers follow five brands or less.  They’re quick to unfollow if businesses overuse the social channels…and they’re almost as quick to unfollow if the channels aren’t used enough. How do you measure the appropriate amount of Facebook or Twitter posts everyday? There isn’t a ton of science behind questions like that, but it makes one thing clear: you’d better be listening.

Companies everywhere have figured out that it costs a lot more to gain a customer than to keep one, so there is a renewed focus on engagement and quite frankly, giving them what they want. For instance, from gamification to mobile coupons, brands are gearing up their efforts at interacting with consumers through smartphones.

Speaking of which…

On Tuesday (3/22) morning Access EVP of Business and Product Development Kelly Passey was part of a panel presentation on mobile loyalty. “Let Them Have Cake” focused on the realities companies are facing as consumers are spending more and more time on their mobile devices. We’re going to have Kelly publish his thoughts on the expo and session when he returns from his world travels, so keep an eye on this space in the coming weeks.

Thanks to Mark and Erin and the rest of the team at Loyalty 360 for a great conference!

This week (3/28 – 4/1) we’ll be at the American Resort Development Association talking revenue and loyalty with the vacation and shared ownership industry. These are folks that Access has worked with for years and years now, offering first day incentives, incentive offers, exit programs and more. If you’re in Orlando, stop by and see us at booth 1220.

Access at the Loyalty Expo 2011

Loyalty 360Attending the Loyalty Expo in Orlando this week? Stop by booth 303 to see a demo of our new mobile discount network. While you’re there, ask about the “deal books” we’ve arranged with Orlando-area merchants just for LE360 attendees (while supplies last).

On Tuesday (March 22), our EVP of Business and Product Development Kelly Passey will be part of a discussion on mobile loyalty. Join Kelly and a panel of executives at 9:50am for what should be an interesting, practical roundtable.
